Chris Garvey takes on job of guiding good times for Club Naked Bend
Heads up, Club Naked members in the Bend area: Fun times lie just ahead.
As veteran Naked Winery team member Chris Garvey slips into the role of Club Naked manager for the Bend tasting room, Club members might rightly ask, “So, what can we expect?”
Based on Garvey's history, look for the fearless integration of Naked wines with fun and games in the great outdoors of Central Oregon.
“The magic of Bend is that it's an active populace,” Garvey says. “Everybody is doing something all the time. My challenge is to cater to them and give them an experience that fits that.”
Look, for example, to a snow play date in January to celebrate National Brownie Day. For Benders who like to party indoors, Garvey is working on a Western Fancy Dance the same month – break out the buckles and spurs and “giddy-up, gal.”
All this festive mojo comes honestly. Garvey hails from back east, where he worked four summers as a wine steward with the Basin Harbor resort on Lake Champlain in Vermont.
“It's old East Coast money, and the same people go there every year,” he recalls.
Garvey did some time at St. Michael's College and Johnson State in Vermont, but the call of the wild took him away from all that, to the slopes around Lake Tahoe for the 1990s.
Ever the footloose sort, he migrated north to Ashland, staffed events for Vans shoes until 2007, when Portland called. After a year in Stumptown's dining scene, a gig with the Mt. Hood Ski Patrol got him going uphill – and down, to Hood River.
A visit to Naked's downtown Hood River tasting room, and it was club at first sight.
“I thought, this place seems fun, and I always want to work where it's fun,” he recalls.
During the last seven years, Garvey has worked the Naked tasting room, and helped staff event, such as the Newport Wine & Seafood Festival.
Garvey calls Hood River home, but commutes south to Bend every week to support and serve the area's resident Club Naked members.
“Bend has a pretty good sized population of Club Naked members,” Garvey says. “Because they live in the area, they just drop in, so we see them more often than we might see club members in Hood River, where a lot of them live out of the area.”
In Bend, he says, “we want to make them feel welcome and give them ways to have fun.”
To make that happen, Naked's “higher ups” realized, Garvey's our guy – and now he's yours, too.
